Braithwaite

"Braithwaite" (pastel, 6x6inches) $265

I'm here at the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, which goes on through Sunday in Ann Arbor, MI. Find me in booth 145 on Washington! I'm trying to be good and work on some little paintings while I'm out here. This is from earlier today.

(The sun was at just the right angle to my board when I was done, and I caught the finished shot showing the little shadows from the pastel texture. Wow! I might try that instead of scanning from now on, at least for the small stuff.)

This image is one that I had composed a while back, and had the underpainting ready for the pastel. It's one of my daring compositional attempts, with the eye in the exact center of the painting. I like when I can "break a rule" and still get the other lines, angles and shapes in an image to lay themselves out in a strong way!

Here are a few progress shots and how Braithwaite looks in his frame:

This was the only pic I had of the underpainting. It shows three layers of the gold primer, which gets darker on each application. The terra cotta and the black primers went on next. You can kind of see the finished underpainting under the pastel in the next shot...

Ruger

"Ruger" (pastel, 7x5 inches) sold

Here's the last one of the triple-demo from the Milwaukee workshop. I pasteled Ruger along with Atir and Henry, all in a row on Sunday, after doing simultaneous underpaintings the day before. This gives the students an idea of how I work my "asssembly-line" method of painting when at home in the studio!

Henry

"Henry" (pastel, 7x5 inches) sold

Henry is another of the three consecutive demos from the Milwaukee workshop. I underpainted all three of them simultaneously as a demo on Sunday morning, then painted (pasteled) them in a row on Monday.

Here are some shots of the underpainting "assembly line" demo, and a couple closeups of Henry. I didn't get shots of the pastel part. I'll post the little Hereford calf soon!

Atir

"Atir" (pastel, 7x5 inches) sold

This was one of my triple demo this morning. That's when I paint the pastel on three underpainted images in a row, with no questions or talking. The students get a good show of how I work in the studio. Unfortunately I also forgot to have anyone take progress shots with my camera. But tomorrow I'll have time to post the "assembly-line" underpaintings from the Sunday morning demo, one of which was this one!

Park Trail #40

"Park Trail #40"  (pastel, 6x6 inches)  $200 unframed for the next two days, or $265 framed

Today's afternoon demo in the Milwaukee workshop. I almost have yesterday's demo done, and will have at least 3 new paintings by tomorrow, which I underpainted today.

The workshop is going very well; it's a very talented bunch and they're all having fun!

Here are some shots from my demo, and some of my students at work on their own paintings from today and yesterday:
